Motor imagination combines the field of cognitive psychology with physical rehabilitation. Motor imagery is the ability to imagine yourself performing certain motor actions without actually performing them. This area has become a powerful tool in rehabilitation, improving range of motion, and preventing pain.

Why does it work? When we imagine a movement action, the brain activates the same neural pathways that would be activated if we were to actually perform the action. It helps to improve the connection between the brain and the muscles, and helps in rehabilitation processes such as after sports injuries, strokes, or surgeries.

In addition, using motor imagery contributes to improving range of motion and preventing pain by allowing patients to practice movements in their minds without the physical pain associated with physically performing the movements. Using this method can maintain the mobility of the joints and muscles and at the same time reduce the risk of stiffness and paralysis.

Integrating motor imagery techniques in rehabilitation is a process that includes several steps. Here is a possible way to implement it:

  1. Understanding the situation

  2. Teaching motor imagery

  3. Mental rehearsal

  4. Monitoring and correction

  5. Incorporating physical movement

This method improves not only the range of motion but also the self-confidence of the patient in the physical aspect, and reduces the pain accompanying the movements. In our clinic, motor imagination is often combined with other methods and produces results that the clients usually call in one word: magic!
